It’s what real, ambitious people sound like when they’re trying to keep their lives interesting. Characters banter in a mode that is witty and inventive-viewers get the sense that every person is trying to be some sort of artist-and yet never feels written. Goldman, 30, met his collaborators, Sasha Winters and Jay Gillespie, during their first year of college at Bard, and Season 1 of The Outs was set and filmed in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where Goldman and Winters lived, amid the profusion of post-college people working toward or sort of working toward their novels, screenplays, or casting callbacks. “It worked for people, despite being a little scrap of a thing,” says director, writer, and star Adam Goldman of that debut episode, which opens with two people meeting through a hookup app. Now, its audience is about to get even bigger: Vimeo will debut the second season on March 30, another major investment in original series from the video-hosting giant.
After a debut episode made on “$500, 48 hours, and paying people in sandwiches,” the Web series The Outs-about the plight of the single-and-mingling millennial-garnered an impressive following when it debuted a seven-episode season in 2012.
